Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

This month is the last month for the Snail Mail Exchange. Sign up here until December 7th!

We were so lucky this year to go to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York. My niece was chosen at cheer camp to be in the parade as one of the cheerleaders so we went to support her!

We left the apartment in Brooklyn where we were staying at 5 am in order to get into the city and get a good spot for the parade. I had read online that standing near the start of the parade is the best bet to get a good spot, so we headed for 77th and West Central Park.
We ended up on the same subway as a ton of the cheerleaders. It was too bad we couldn't find my niece, but these poor cheerleaders were in their not warm, tiny cheerleading outfits in the 25 degree weather. They all had emergency blankets to keep them warm, but we were assured that they didn't work so well.

We finally found a good waiting spot about 7 am, 2 hours before the parade started. We were about 3 people back from the street, good enough to see, so we set up camp.
The bad thing about not living in New York is that we didn't have blankets, or even our warmest clothes with us, so standing outside in November in New York was pretty freaking freezing. I'm pretty sure if you comment on Hal's Movember Musketeer look he'll love you forever. Luckily we found ways to entertain ourselves.
Finally the parade started! I'm not going to lie, it was pretty cool to see the parade live. My family has never been one to watch the parade, but it was cool to see the floats going down the street, and watch the amazing bands and performers go by.
Finally it was time to see my niece. We didn't actually get a picture of it, but we did get a video, and I did steal this from her facebook. She's the third one back, with her pom poms together right in front of her.

It was so cool to see her in the parade, and be close enough that we could yell out her name and she could see us. We left to warm up in a restaurant after we saw her. Everyone around us was appalled we weren't staying to see Santa, but after 4+ hours standing outside I'd say watch Santa on TV. It was worth it to see it live once, and then watch it on TV from them on out.

We caught up with my niece later and took her out to Thanksgiving dinner. It definitely didn't feel like a normal Thanksgiving, but it was definitely fun and memorable anyway.
Here's a video of their practice performance that they did in front of the cameras. We were so impressed at how good they were!

Wow!! I've never known anyone who's actually been there! That really must be quite a show to see it in real life, and such an adventure for your niece to perform in it! Although I can imagine she'd feel pretty chilly! I'm not sure I'd even want to be outside for that long!
