Charleston & Savannah

Over Easter weekend Hal and I decided to have a quick little getaway. He took his third CPA exam on April 1st, and I was off the medicine that makes me really sick, so we saw it as the perfect excuse to head out of town.

We started the getaway in Charleston, but we didn't end up giving ourselves enough time to actually see the city. But we did go to the Magnolia Plantation

We didn't have much time there, but we got to see a bit of the gardens, the slave quarters, and the swamp. I'd love to go back and do the tour of the slaves quarters.

We found a Groupon from Seamonkey Water Sports to try kayaking for the first time. We headed out on a double kayak and had such a blast. It took a while to get it down, but we finally got in the swing of things and had a good time out on the river. The owner was super duper nice, and we'd definitely use them again.

It was our plan to head to the beach since we were already on Hilton Head, but my blasted antibiotic makes me photo sensitive, and the hour we spent on the water burned me through the sun screen, so we headed directly to Savannah instead.

So many people told us how much they loved Savannah before we went, and now I see why. The city was wonderful. It's just full of nice people, old oak trees, spanish moss, and the most beautiful victorian and antebellum houses.

We did a free walking tour by Free Savannah Walking Tours, and I would highly recommend using them if you're in town. Our tour was way better than the others we saw people on while we were there. And it's donation based, so if you loved your guide, you can give accordingly.

 

I almost got Hal to do a ghost tour with me, since Savannah is America's #1 haunted city. Instead we ended up at the square where Tom Hanks sat on the bench in Forrest Gump. Apparently the city won't allow the actual bench to be there, because it causes major traffic problems.

We ate such delicious food while we were there. Seriously delicious. I'd recommend Zunzi's South African food, but the portions are huge, so definitely think about sharing. We also loved Sweet Potato Kitchen. We had great service, and apparently they were on Man vs Food. PJ Thai Cuisine was delicious. Thank you Yelp.

We loved visiting the south for the first time and fell in love with it's charm. Spring hasn't hit DC yet, so the weather and all the blossoms were such a breath of fresh air. 

And the perfect ending to our trip? We stopped at a grocery store in Benson, North Carolina where the friendly cashier asked where we were from, and said he knew we weren't from there because, and I quote "because you don't smell like gravy."

So there you have it. I guess we're northerners.
