Hal and I love a good road trip, so while he was out here surprise visiting me and we found ourselves with an extra day due to a flight cancellation, we realized DC is a pretty great place to live. With 2-3 hours we could go to Gettysburg, Philadelphia, the beach, Richmond, and so many more places, so we decided to go further South than either of us have ever been and hit the road to Richmond.
It was a beautiful 65 degree day so we were planning on just wandering around a main street area to find that Richmond doesn't really have a main street area. We found ourselves at the Edgar Allen Poe Museum, in the oldest house in Richmond talking to the most helpful Richmonders we could have asked for. They suggested we go to the old civil war cemetery, drive down monuments row, and hit up Carryown area; and that's exactly what we did.
The cemetery was huge. Probably the biggest one I've ever been in. There were definitely newer parts to it, but certain areas were dedicated just to officers from the confederacy and people who served in the Civil War. It was really old and really beautiful.
Then we drove over to Monuments Row where we realized we had been in what probably was the wrong side of the tracks earlier, because this area of town is absolutely beautiful. The houses are amazing! And apparently I forgot to take a single picture of how beautiful it was. Carytown was so cute as well. It was full of little unique shops and restaurants local to Richmond. Definitely worth a warm evening stroll.
We saw a cool cobblestone street and decided to hit the road back to DC. It was only a 2 hour drive each way, and was definitely worth a day trip.
